“Him Mark Lai” was called the man who legitimized Chinese American history. He was an engineer by day, scholar by night. By examining his life and work, we come to understand the critical pioneering role of community based historians in researching topics not “marketable” within academia yet providing important foundational material for succeeding generations of students and scholars.
